Exeter, near the cathedral
With a population of around 122,000, Exeter is the capital of Devon. The River Exe flows through the city which was the south-westernmost fortified settlement at the time of the Roman occupation of Great Britain. The city has had a mayor since 1207 and is famous for its Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century.
Today it is a modern city with an historic centre, which is largely dominated by a shopping centre that spreads over several streets.
