Newark Park – the mansion
Newark Park is actually a Tudor mansion with 2.8 square kilometres of parkland. It is located in Gloucestershire at the southern end of the Cotswolds and offers great views into the Severn valley.
Newark Park is open to the public as it is now owned by the National Trust. The landscape here is special: The upper part is characterized by a plateau with cattle pastures and the terrain behind the house falls away steeply with footpaths which lead to the lake. In front of the house, you are invited to linger at the tea garden which unfortunately has a makeshift tea house. The former tea room was located in the basement of the house, but could no longer be used due to supposedly modern safety regulations that the entrance could not be thorough a window!
The house itself is built in different stages and is very interesting from an architectural point of view. This is beautifully demonstrated by a demountable model – just ask for help from one of the many volunteers in Newark Park.
