It doesn’t get any more British than this: A traditional thatched house in Amberley with two (originally) British cars in front of it!

Amberley in West Sussex is a village straight out of a picture book! Situated at the foothills of the South Downs in West Sussex and on the edge of the floodplains of the River Arun, it has a population of less than 600 who live in delightful homes with the most beautiful floral decorations in a classical development of thatched houses. Even new construction projects that have been started recently are completely based on conventional construction methods and cannot be noticed at first glance.

Typically British: One of the very few non-thatched houses bears the name “Thatched House”. One of the attractions here is “Amberley Working Museum“, an open-air museum about the industrial history of the southeast of England.

The village can be reached directly by train, but it only has a few B&Bs available and Amberley Castle is a rather expensive hotel.

Don’t these thatched houses with their dormer windows look as if they’re smiling?
