Southern England is by far not as rainy as one might often think. However, the English generally love to sit outside whenever possible. It is therefore no wonder that as well as ‘Tea Rooms,’ ‘Tea Gardens’ also emerged. This is essentially the non-alcoholic counterpart to the beer garden that many pubs offer. Here, light lunches are served at midday, and in the afternoon, there is a wide selection of teas and all kinds of cakes.
The special thing about this is that many tea gardens are extremely simple and only have outdoor areas! They are therefore only open during the warmer seasons and in good weather. They are a wonderful way to sit and enjoy the sun!

In the northwestern part of Exmoor (Somerset), where it is still very wooded, there is a place near the “Dunkery Beacon” in the valley of the “Horner”. It is actually just at a few houses at a bend in the road and is a wonderful starting point for hiking, horse riding, and cycling tours.
There are actually two tea gardens here – just take a look to decide for yourself which one is nicer. A hearty “Ploughman’s Lunch” is definitely recommended– a make-it-yourself sandwich with cheese, chutney, and other side dishes and, of course, the obligatory cup of tea.
