Beer – this is actually a town in Devon!

It sounds like a joke at first, but no: there really is a place called Beer! It is in the southern English county of Devon, directly on the border with Dorset. Beer is a classic seaside resort with a beach which is pleasantly less crowded except in the peak season. It is on the Jurassic Coast, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the English Channel very close to Lyme Regis , and is surrounded by chalk cliffs.

Beer was already mentioned as a place in the Domesday Book of 1066 and at that time with 27 households. Today there are over 1,300 inhabitants and countless visitors in summer. Certainly, there are more than a few who stop here just because of the name and it’s well worth it, because it has a very nice beach, good beer gardens (!) and its own fishermen sell their catch fresh or tastily prepared.

The fishermen are back with the catch of the day and the local beach tractor has pulled the boats up to the beach. They are now largely protected in the absence of a real harbour.
