Alfriston in East Sussex – The Market Place
Alfriston isn’t somewhere that you may have heard of – it’s a village of less than 800 inhabitants in East Sussex in the valley of the Cuckmere River. It is characterised on the one hand by its beautiful location and on the other hand by its completely intact town centre – it is an absolutely typical and adorable old English village!
You can still find several delightful old pubs and an extraordinarily well-stocked and still privately run grocer’s shop (as of 2016). St. Andrews Church which dates back to 1370 is also worth a visit as well as Clergy House, the first property ever acquired by the National Trust.
We found out through a Wikipedia-Entry that in 1931, Eleanor Farjeon wrote the popular hymn “Morning Has Broken” in Alfriston, supposedly about the beauty she saw around her in this village. This song was later sung by Cat Stevens and also found its way into the Anglican Church hymn books.
From Alfriston it is also not very far to the fantastic “Seven Sisters“, the chalk cliffs on the coast.
An additional travel suggestion is to visit Litlington which is not far from Alfriston and much smaller. There is an extraordinarily nice tea garden there. When the weather is nice – and only when the weather is nice! – this is highly recommended. The Tea Garden belongs to a garden centre and is somewhat hidden. Make sure that you look at the map beforehand. You can sit well hidden in the greenery and enjoy your cream tea and/or cucumber sandwiches!
