Dartmouth (Devon)

Dartmouth is – as the name suggests – the town at the mouth of the River Dart in the English Channel. It is an ancient port on the west bank of the river. On the other side is its sister-town Kingswear, which is well connected by ferry and the historic South Devon Railway departs from here.

Protected by Dartmouth Castle at the mouth of the river, the city gained some importance in Devon and still houses the Britannia Royal Naval College which is the most important training institution of the Royal Navy. Today, Dartmouth is especially popular with water sports enthusiasts, as can be seen by its large marinas.

A suggestion for visitors who have some time is to take the boat which sails once a day from Dartmouth up the River Dart to Totnes and back again. This is a really worthwhile tour, and we have even written our own report about this!
