Eastbourne (East Sussex) – seafront with pier
Eastbourne is a seaside town of almost 100,000 inhabitants in East Sussex. Due to its relative proximity to London, it developed into a fashionable seaside resort early on. It was never as well known as nearby Brighton and it is considered a bit of a “quiet sister”, but impresses with its Victorian seafront.
One highlight is the pier, opened in 1870: 304 m long and 20 m wide, it houses entertainment and amusement facilities. The Blue Saloon, however, burned down completely on 30 July 2014, preventing access to the pier. The pictures shown here were taken in 2009, before the fire.
Not far from Eastbourne on a cliff is “Beachy Head“, from where you have beautiful views of the town, into the country and of the sea. A little further away are “Birling Gap” and the famous chalk cliffs “Seven Sisters“.
