The town of Bath in Somerset has its name from the Roman Baths. From 43 AD, the Romans living in Britannia began to build bathhouses around the hot springs found here. Most of these buildings are outstandingly well preserved and can be visited today. In the middle of downtown Bath, the old baths are a good bit below the street level, bypassing magnificent 19th-century buildings.
